🌿 Your Work Matters More Than You Think

When people think about health, they often focus on diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. Yet one of the most significant influences on our wellbeing is something we may overlook: our work. Whether you're employed full-time, running a business, caring for children, volunteering, or managing a household, the work you do each day has the power to affect you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

God created human beings to work. Before sin entered the world, Adam was given responsibility in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and steward creation. Work itself is not a curse; it is part of God's design. Through our work, we contribute, create, serve others, and participate in His purposes. Problems arise when our work becomes disconnected from our values, gifts, calling, or season of life.

Many people live in a constant state of stress, dreading Monday mornings and counting down the days until the weekend. Over time, chronic dissatisfaction and misalignment can take a toll on every area of health. Elevated stress affects sleep, hormones, energy levels, relationships, and even spiritual wellbeing. What may seem like a career issue can eventually become a health issue.

Scripture offers a different vision through the concept of Shalom. Often translated as "peace," Shalom is far more than the absence of conflict. It describes a state of wholeness, completeness, harmony, and flourishing. When we are living in alignment with God's design, we experience a deeper sense of peace—even when life is demanding or challenging.

This doesn't mean everyone should quit their job and pursue something new. Sometimes alignment means embracing the season you're in with renewed purpose and perspective. Other times, it may involve prayerfully considering whether God is leading you toward a different opportunity, responsibility, or calling. The key is learning to discern the difference between temporary challenges and persistent misalignment.

Taking time to honestly evaluate your work can reveal important clues about your overall wellbeing. Does your work consistently drain you, or does it provide a sense of purpose and contribution? Are you operating within your gifts and strengths? Do you experience moments of peace, meaning, and fulfillment, even amid the demands?

Work is about more than earning a living. It is one of the ways we steward the lives God has entrusted to us. When our work aligns with our values, purpose, and calling, it can become a source of health, growth, and flourishing rather than a source of chronic stress and depletion.
