🌿 Abiding, Not Striving

Many of us approach growth the same way we approach everything else in life—we work harder, push further, and try to be more disciplined. While effort certainly has its place, Jesus presents a different picture of transformation in John 15. Instead of striving to produce fruit on our own, He invites us to remain connected to Him, the true Vine.

This image is both simple and profound. A branch does not struggle to produce fruit through sheer determination. Its role is to stay connected to the vine, drawing nourishment, strength, and life from its source. The fruit is not manufactured; it is the natural result of that connection.

Yet many of us live as if the opposite were true. We chase better health, stronger habits, greater discipline, and spiritual growth through willpower alone. When progress is slow or setbacks occur, we often conclude that we simply need to try harder. Over time, this striving can leave us exhausted, discouraged, and disconnected from the very source of life.

Jesus offers another way. He teaches that lasting fruit comes from abiding—remaining in Him, staying close to Him, and allowing His life to flow through us. This truth applies not only to our spiritual lives but also to our wellness journeys. Healthy habits matter, but they are most sustainable when they flow from a place of connection rather than performance.

One of the most beautiful promises in John 15 is that Jesus desires His joy to be in us and that our joy may be complete. This is a reminder that the Christian life is not merely about behavior modification or checking spiritual boxes. It is about relationship. As we remain connected to Christ, we experience not only growth and fruitfulness but also the deep joy that comes from walking closely with Him.

The invitation to abide is ultimately an invitation to stop carrying burdens we were never meant to bear alone. Growth is God's work. Our responsibility is to remain connected to the One who makes that growth possible. When we do, fruit becomes the natural outcome of a life rooted in Him.
